Spin/Spun

Project Statement

I created Spin/Spun in collaboration with Tucson local sign spinner Cody “Cool Cat” Norman. My intention in producing this video was to comment on the grueling nature of capitalism. A sign spinner, in the desert heat, scorching sun, and all for what? Minimum wage; in pursuit of the American Dream?

Our collaboration together shifted my preconceived notions of what a sign spinner’s life might be, and Cody amazed me with every turn. He was a devoted performance artist, and he loved his job and was passionate about honing his craft. Cody learned his trade in the circus and had lived a difficult life supporting his dream to be an artist. In the course of this pursuit, Cody sadly ended up homeless and an addict. In time, Cody found his way back to sobriety and began signs spinning to support himself financially. After some time, he rebuilt his life and soon had a van, a home, and a family whom he loved dearly. Cody was genuinely proud to be an American, and the opportunities it had afforded him.

However, in January of 2019, I heard via social media that Cody had passed away suddenly. With a heavy heart, I Immediately realized the video that we had created together two years prior had yet again revealed itself to me in a new light. Rest in peace Cody “Cool Cat” Norman.
